Longworth and SFS deliver striking copper exterior for Glasgow Centre for Virus Research

Situation

Design expertise and high quality NVELOPE® support systems from SFS, have helped to provide The Centre for Virus Research with an aesthetically pleasing and state-of-the-art facility, which since completion, has achieved BREEAM Excellent status.

The aim of this £20 million project was to bring scientists researching viruses and viral diseases in humans and animals together under one roof.

Solution

Building envelope specialist, Longworth was the contractor for this project, and was responsible for specifying and installing the main façade. With the objective being to create an aesthetically pleasing end result, Longworth required a reliable cladding support system that would not disrupt the design of the façade.

Longworth specified NVELOPE® NV1 brackets and rail system to fix 1,500m² of copper cladding. The project, which required the new facility to link to the two existing buildings, took two years to complete. To check the workmanship and design performance of this project, the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) conducted a rigorous test of the cladding against water resistance. The test achieved highest scores, which in turn proved the efficiency of the products used. On completion, the building was given a BREEAM Excellent status.
